What's your medium of choice?

Our society values the graphically visual medium. Even more so, we value graphics coupled with sound to receive information in the same way most of us navigate the world. Our news and entertainment is almost exclusively received via the television. It can be said that by diminishing textual mediums we have cheapened the word.

When studying authors like Poe do you think graphic novels like Nevermore do justice to the word pictures we create as we read his texts? Why? Or do you think our imaginations can do far more justice to the terror Poe attempts to invoke on his readers? Why?

  1. I think our imagination can do more justice and terror in poes writing. If we see it, it interact to our brain and justified the story as if the story was true. Poe story like nevermore from reading is more powerful when we are trying to see it our head. Some times if we see it in front of our page, it would just be right in front of you and forget. But as we create in our head from our text it will be remember because our mind create the scene of the text.

  2. I believe that the imagination can create such a stronger picture of the stories, rather than seeing the pictures itself. As readers, we are able to add our own details of what we believe exists, in order to make the story more interesting.

  3. while its true that our imaginations can go much further than any picture, i believe a picture, for example a crow sitting a tree outside a window, can give a good starting point. what I'm trying to say is that looking at a picture of a crow allows us see what the illustrator wanted us to see but we can also add to that. If it think that particular crow would be creepier with sleek black wings and a blue sheen then in my mind i could add that. I f i think that crow would be scarier with knobby wrinkled and warped feet i can add that in my minds eye.

  4. I definitely agree that we have devalued texts as a society. Edgar Allen Poe is one of my favorite authors, his sensory detail makes reading his terror stories extremely realistic. With visuals being the popular preference in current times, we have stunted the power of our imaginations. A million people can imagine the same story differently but when reading graphic texts such as Poe's famous Nevermore we are already influenced in how we should "see" the story unfolding before us. I think life is about balance, television and graphic novels are great for exploring the ideas of others, but a nice old fashioned book is also a great workout for the imagination.

  5. I think that adding images and sound to stories can enhance storytelling. It doesn't automatically make things better or worse, it all depends on how well it is done. Something that's more of a horror story, that tend to leave a lot of details up to our imaginations, can be directed in a way that purposefully leaves out information to still be disturbing. Certain people respond better to graphic/visual novels, so adding in some picture might make the overall story resonate better with them.

  6. By reading a story the person imagines the issue to be anything they want it to be. Details matter when your reading because you want to be able to create a visual in your head. This article reminds me of the books that are turned into movies. You will hear the audience say something like, " Oh that didn't happen in the book" or they forgot to put in an important scene.Somehow, having to read is better for people; get your imagination flowing. If you get tired of reading, Then stop in the middle and just watch the movie or actually watch what happened in the news.

  7. Some stories where they give a visual example can help the reader because maybe what is given is more description that what the author had originally written. Poe has stories that are really spooky and make you feel almost as if there's someoen that could be watching you while Nevermore you are able to truly distinguish fiction and real life. Your imagination could also be underdeveloped and you might not have such a scary thing created in your mind while someone else reading the same story could have imagined the scariest thing to them. I think we should leave our imagination to run wild when reading poe's stories because then it could go farther than you thought.
