Skinny Jeans: Gotta Have it? Make it Stop?

Going to the Oscars?  Top your skinny jeans with a sequin top.

Going to a business meeting?  Wear a jacket with your skinny jeans.

Going to a ball game?  Your Giant's cap will look stunning with those skinny jeans.

Going to a funeral?  They make black skinny jeans.

If you watch TV, read magazines, or shop at the mall you would think that everybody from pregnant women to your boyfriend wears skinny jeans.  As a Professor I get to go "back to school" shopping too.  All I want this year are a couple of pairs of slacks.  BUT if you go to Macy's, Target, KMart, Ross, T.J. Max, Old Navy, Sears, or Nordstrom's you would think that everybody wears blue denim skinny jeans.

Here's some images you'll never scrub from your brain:  Grandma in skinny jeans!  How about your mom in skinny jeans? Skinny jeans with a muffin top.  Skinny jeans where the crotch is so low you get a moon shot.  And what's up with drop-crotch skinny jeans? Don't even get me started on jeggings!

I know this is a bit off topic for this blog, but do you think it would be appropriate for your professor to show up to class in skinny jeans?  Yikes, there's another one of those images.  Do you think it would be appropriate to show up for a job interview in skinny jeans--unless of course you're going for that super model job you've always dreamed of.

  1. Skinny Jeans.....
Mmm mmm hmm. I ain't got time to be buying no skinny jeans. I honestly don't understand why people go around in pants that act like a tourniquet for your calves. Back in the day, people decided to wear clothes because they realized and they protected them from the elements. I don't understand why people have to be wearing such tight pants. I think its weird.

  2. I feel like skinny jeans have just become a staple in the closets of the younger generations. They probably don't even know what bootcut jeans are! I personally like skinny jeans but I absolutely do not understand those low crotch skinny jeans. Who even came up with that concept?! It looks like a beginner just started a job at a jean company and cut the proportions all wrong. And for the people who wear them, it just looks like they're carrying a whole lot of baggage around with them or wearing a diaper. It even looks funny when they're walking, like it's a struggle. Skinny jeans should just stick to being regular old skinny jeans, don't stray too far from it because then it starts to get weird.

  3. Yeah, I agree with Daniel. Skinny Jeans are not made for EVERYONE. Especially if you're kind of big in the torso area. It just looks like you're struggling to breathe. When i tried on my first pair of "Super Skinny Jeans" i was like "why am i doing this to myself? This makes my life more of a struggle." Even though everyone was wearing them I decided to just wear sweatpants or something less constricting and more comfortable. I remember in P.E. my sophomore year every girl had skinny jeans, but since it was P.E. we had to change into sweats and every girl had a really hard time taking them off and putting them back on. I was literally laughing at everyone struggle. To this day i do not understand why people still wear them.

  4. I love skinny jeans!!! but that's only because I am a thin female. skinny jeans fit on me the way they should. the muffin top was mentioned in this blog which made me laugh because you see a lot of people walking around with skinny jeans on with their gut hanging out. can you say GROSS!! come on did you even look in the mirror when you got dressed today? these please that sport the skinny jean muffin top really need some new friends to tell them that the muffin top is not a good look. please big girls stop wearing skinny jeans. Men skinny jeans were made for women so please stop stealing your girlfriends jeans, I mean how is that even comfortable. Men you do realize that you may be damaging your future children if you get my drift. As for wearing skinny jeans to a interview that's a no no. i'm a manager at a BBQ place and if someone walked in for an interview in skinny jeans I wouldn't hire them. IT'S NOT PERFESIONA, JUST DONT DO IT. Female professors feel free to wear skinny jeans if your not a size sixteen

  5. I fee like skinny jeans should be for teenagers and young adults to wear. Never have I ever seen an old adult wearing a skinny jeans and I think it would be quite odd to seem old people wear it. I think if a professor show up wearing skinny jeans to there class it would be alright if the person was around mid 20s and not if they were 40 or 50 years old, that would just be frightening to me. As for a job interview, I wouldn't think it is okay to wear skinny jeans for it because you would want to look professional and skinny jeans just doesn't seem like the thing to wear to a job interview.

  7. I think skinny jeans are new fashion trend. Although it is not appropriate for school or job interview, it would be okay for any other circumstance. Fashion reflects consumer's needs. If majority of consumer does not want to get them, fashion market wouldn't make skinny jeans any more.

  8. It's interesting how fashion is becoming more and more mainstream. While skinny jeans may fit some people quite well, others not so much. I feel that it's a personal choice to wear what you want, but if you go in for work or to a job interview try to look professional. It doesn't matter how good you look, if the setting is wrong your cloths will make you look immature and out of place.

  9. Skinny jeans are in style nowadays especially with teenagers and young adults. Personally, about 90% of my jeans are skinny jeans and I just love them. But of course, like any other style trend they are not for everybody. It just depends on your personal choice. I don't see anything wrong with anybody older wanting to wear them as long as they feel comfortable and like them. Even though they are in style they are not the only type of jeans you can find, it just all depends on where and what sections your looking at in a store.

  10. "...BUT if you go to Macy's, Target, KMart, Ross, T.J. Max, Old Navy, Sears, or Nordstrom's you would think that everybody wears blue denim skinny jeans." I wouldn't think that at all, maybe because I worked at Macy's and did not see that but honestly, if it looks good on you, it shouldn't matter what you wear. Age is included in that. Although I saw many people wear some questionable choices, especially on super-early morning shifts. I don't think skinny jeans are the actual problem here. Sure, there are appropriate and not appropriate times to rock skinny jeans. Job interviews and funerals are probably not the best of times to do so, I agree. But if you're a professor and you wish to wear them, go ahead, no one is stopping you. However, I know for me, I like skinny jeans simply because I am very short with stubby little legs. That's when skinny jeans become beneficial. I enjoy that they taper in towards the bottom, leaving me worry free about the bottom of my pants getting soaked. With skinny jeans or any type of jeans you just need to find the right pair, for your body shape.

  11. I have a professor that wears skinny jeans because he is so fashionable and he doesn't come off as a typical high maintenance looking professor so I have no problem with professors wearing skinny jeans. Skinny jeans are fine anywhere as long as someone looks good in them and it's age appropriate(and what I mean is that nobody over 43 should be wearing them unless you're Brad Pitt or Salma Hayek). One thing for sure is, skinny jeans are here to stay! I love them whenever I'm feeling thin, but of course, I'll go over to yoga pants when I am not feeling very skinny but I still have a dresser filled with pairs of skinny jeans that I would definitely wear to a job interview

  12. Styles of jeans seemed to evolve around the years. It went from bell bottoms, to flares, boot-cuts to skinny jeans. Skinny jeans have become more stylish recently. Depending on the jeans, skinny jeans are comfortable to wear. Skinny jeans are a casual wear and are becoming a more popular as a business casual style. I believe anyone has the freedom to wear skinny jeans. If an old woman or man feels good in a pair of skinny jeans they should go right ahead and wear them. A lot of people try to judge harshly on what others wear. In reality, others shouldn't criticize what others wear, especially when the person who is criticizing isn't the one wearing the clothes. If a person feels good and is able to strut their stuff then they should go right ahead.

  13. Skinny jeans are worn by so many people today that I don't think I would notice if one of my professors was wearing them. I don't see a problem with anyone wearing them for or to anything, that is of course if they actually fit right. As it is mentioned in the post skinny jeans come in black and also in many different colors too so they are easy to pair with almost anything and they are appropriate for most occasions. I don't think skinny jeans will ever go out of style. I love skinny jeans and I wear them everyday, they've been around for a while now and more and more people have started to use them so I only see this trend expanding to get bigger and bigger.

  14. This post is so relevant to the way I feel about the takeover of skinny jeans. It's a trend I kind of wish never started. Not that I'm into being trendy or "fashionable," but every time I wear a pair of flared, straight-legged or even capri style jeans, I feel like I'm going for some kind of vintage look. Wearing flared jeans makes me feel like a foreigner who is trying to bring back the 70's.
If I had a professor who wore skinny jeans to class, I'd probably think she was some kind of an assistant, like, is she in her right mind to wear this piece of cloth that does everything to accentuate her lower half? It seems wrong that our culture and society gives a dress code to basically everything we do. I'd like to think I'm the kind of person who can easily rebel to societies norms and ideas of whats acceptable, however I'm pretty sure I'd be a little freaked out if the person teaching me physics and history wore a pair of jeggings to class.

  15. Everyone today seems to be wearing skinny jeans. They are very versatile. Personally i hate when people wear jegging, they aren't jeans! Getting back on topic, like i said before everyone wears skinny jeans and i don't think i would have a problem with my professor wearing them unless they were a guy. I really believe that guys shouldn't go anywhere near them, it is not an appealing sight to see a guys junk smashed against his jeans. Its wrong on so many levels and can be hazardous to their privates. As for a job interview situation i suppose it depends on what type of job you are interviewing for, fast food, fashion, intern possibly and as for office interviews as a temp ora professional job no skinny jeans shouldn't be worn.

  16. i absolutely love this blog post. My whole generation is brought up on wearing skinny jeans. I thought it was really funny because my 9 year old nephew told me he wanted me to take him back to school shopping because his mom wouldn't let him get skinny jeans. Me personally, i like to wear them from time to time. My mother likes them on me because it gets me away from that baggy "hood" look. They look and feel better than baggy jeans. Now there is a big difference from skinny and too tight, i think thats where men need to find the difference. Skater kids wear the tight skinny jeans and others wear skinny jeans where they are not too tight where you can't breathe. In an interview situation i believe you should always dress up. Skinny jeans are not the right pants to wear. Look professional to get a professional position. But skinny jeans are something everyone should have in their closet.

  17. Skinny jeans have now become one of the biggest fashion statements. From children to teenagers and even adults it has revolutionized into an item that can be worn by several different people. To be quite honest I have seen teachers in skinny jeans and it really does not bother me. I feel as if everyone is entitled to be their own and have their own style. As well as for an interview , I have shown up to interviews for such things as scholarships and felt quite welcomed and not stared at for what I was wearing. I believe as long as someone knows how to correctly style the skinny jeans. Skinny jeans can be either dressed up or dressed down. As a person who constantly wears skinny jeans I would say it is appropriate to wear skinny jeans because they are a fashion piece that can certainly be dressed up.

  18. Skinny jeans have become a necessary item in the younger generation's closet. Personally, I can say that I own a number of skinny jeans. My "jeans drawer" is overflowing with different styles of them for different occasions. I do feel like skinny jeans is just a phase in the fashion world, just like every other trend. I think that skinny jeans are appropriate to wear only for certain places and occasions. It's more casual than anything. Even though they are casual, you could dress skinny jeans up. I personally think that professors wearing skinny jeans would be weird. Professors are professional and teach to a diverse group with different ages, not only to teenagers or to young adults, so what they wear should be professional to everyone. I also think that it would be terrible to show up to a job interview in denim skinny jeans. First impressions are everything and skinny jeans can't beat slacks, dress pants, or skirts. If you want to be seen as professional, then maybe skip on the skinny jeans.

  19. Skinny jeans, have made a comeback, according to my mom. I remember being completely against the idea, because I thought I was too big to wear "skinny" jeans. But in 8th grade, it started to get really hard to find anything that wasn't skinny jeans. I gave in. I don't even remember wearing anything that wasn't considered a skinny jean now. I think the idea has become completely casual. I have pictured all these thing, and witnessed them as well. My mom, who is a grandma, wears skinny jeans. And my teachers as well. And I have worn skinny jeans to an interview, black jeans of course, and it has never been looked down on. Well not that I've noticed. You can always dress a skinny jean up, I wear them to my sorority meetings, with a cute shirt, and a blazer and I've never been charged for not following dress code. I thought this would be a phase that would pass, but I don't see it stopping anytime soon. I think as casual as it's become we've stopped referring to them as "skinny" jeans and just jeans, because everyone has them.
