The 12 Types of Procrastinators and Kittens

20px_procrastination_comic
How did I run across this great comic?  I was procrastinating of course!  Instead of grading papers, working on lesson plans, or writing the myriad papers that are coming due, I was cruising through Facebook and this little gem from Mashable caught my eye.

What kind of procrastinator am I?

The Cleaner - definitely - my house could always use a good scrubbing before I actually start grading papers or writing.  Although, lots of thinking gets done as my bathroom starts to shine (that's justification on top of procrastination).

The Sidetracker - yes, sometimes writing about comics is a lot more fun than grading papers (no offense).

The Social Sharer - my Facebook page is always open AND thank goodness I have never really figured out how to twitter.

The Internet Researcher - but it is legitimate research.  After all, I teach short film.

A friend once said, "You can get a lot of procrastinating done in twenty minutes."  It took me twenty minutes to figure out what he meant.

Here's the kitten part of this post.  In these postmodern days of new fangled apps there are all kinds of ways to boost productivity including Written? Kitten! which Mashable says "isn't a plugin or extension, but rather a helpful tool if you respond well to positive reinforcement. Each time you reach a goal (for example, you hit 500 words in your essay), the site rewards you with an adorable picture of a kitten, generated from Flickr. Meowww."

How do you avoid procrastination?  Do you have every social media window open while you try to do homework?

Comments

  1. I procrastinate a lot. I am doing it write now. Procrastinating on writing a response relevant to this post. It happens. I avoid my homework for a lot of things. T.V, video games, pokemon cards, youtube, facebook, whatever I can find that can draw my attention away from my responsibilities.

  2. Honestly, I'm a little bit of all of these examples of procrastinators. Most of the time, I'm a napper, social sharer, internet researcher, or gamer. I always have a Facebook tab open while I'm doing any sort of work, and I definitely check it every 5 minutes or so, just to see if I have any notifications. I also have a YouTube tab open just in case I wanna take a break and watch a cool or funny video. I also love napping. Most of my 15-minute naps turn into 2-hour naps, which eventually ruin my sleeping patterns and motivation to do homework, which makes me procrastinate even more. It's a never-ending cycle.

  3. I put the pro in procrastinate. I am the best procrastinator ever. Well in my eyes. I tend to put assignments off until the last minute. According to the comic I am "the napper", "the social sharer", "the internet researcher", "the snacker" (who ISN'T a snacker?), "the gamer", and "the perpetuator". Usually I procrastinate so much, that i forget what i was supposed to do, then when I remember, I panic and do it really fast without really thinking about what I'm doing.

  4. I am definitely a textbook procrastinator. Yesterday for example i had to type a reading log for one of my classes. What turned into a 45 minute task turned into a all day experience. I played some video games, snacked, watched TV, and then at the end of the night, panicked because it was not close to being done at all.

One way i would fight procrastinating is to remove yourself away from technology. I like to do work on my kitchen table because it removes me from my computer. However i still have my phone. Every now and then i catch myself checking Instagram and Facebook through the app on my phone.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I avoid procrastination by reminding myself constantly that I have to do this assignment and it can't wait until last minute. However I would say I am more of the Sidetracker procrastinator because I would have my Microsoft Word document open ready to write my essay and than the next I would be going on YouTube ; listening to music. On the other hand, no, I don't have every social media window open while doing my homework; the only social media tab that is open is YouTube and I rarely go on Facebook.

  6. I would have to agree with all of these. this is exactly how I am. while I try to do homework on my computer, i have my phone right in my lap, i have facebook open in another tab, and then I have to check twitter on my phone. But most of the time right when i deiced to do homework I end up getting sleepy and then I tell myself i can just do it later. Then later comes and I just keep trying to put it off for as long as possible. I end up going to bed at 2 most nights because I do this same thing every single day. As much as i say im going to change this habit I just can't.

  7. I am very good at avoiding procrastination. My daily activities and duties motivate me to stay focused and attentive in everything I do. Every week day, I turn my phone on airplane mode so that, even though I am still able to access the time, I do not get distracted by texts, phone calls, or other social media interruptions. On top of that, I limit the amount of time I spend on my phone each day and do not usually make much use of it until the evening when all of my work is done. I’m never one to watch TV or movies in the evening so I normally pick up a book if I do not feel like doing homework or need to catch a break in my 13-hour days, but once I read a few chapters, it’s back to reality and completing what needs to be done.

  8. For me, procrastination is hard to avoid. It takes a lot for me to get focused on school work when I am not at school. If I really need to get work done, I tend to make long lists of what I need to do. I plan the rest of my day out and try to mentally prepare myself for all of the near future focusing I will have to do. When the time comes, I drive myself to the library and pick out a secluded table from everyone in there and begin to work on my assignments. That usually does not cause me to procrastinate. On the other hand, when I am limited on time, I tend to lock myself in my room. I attempt to get everything that is distracting to one side, but that usually does not end well. If I have homework on the computer, which is common for me, I end up opening social media pages and blasting music. I rarely ever get any work done. I basically end up finding myself in my soft bed, listening to loud music, and playing on every social media you can possibly think of.

  9. I keep my phone away from me when I'm trying to do homework because it's too distracting. If it's close to me, I'm too tempted to text or check Facebook and Instagram. But one thing that I do have on is the tv. I can't seem to concentrate without background noise. Sometimes I get so zoned into doing my homework and don't realize what the tv is saying. But there are times where I get sidetracked and end up watching tv instead. Then I start snacking and forget what I started out doing in the first place. So in my case, I think I'm the sidetracker and the snacker. And probably the watcher as well. I don't procrastinate too much though. Or at least I try not to.

  10. It really is interesting how accurate that comic is. After all, I’m sure I’ve been in all of those situations at least once. It’s amazing how there is always something more interesting to do, even if that something is cleaning my room.
I’d have to say that I fit into the category of the gamer or the watcher more. It’s always “one more game” or “one more episode”. Then 30 minutes later and that one game or one episode simply want enough.
On occasion I’m the social sharer. I will never have Facebook or twitter up. I don’t like to use those websites; however I will talk with friends over Skype. It can be tough to leave a call with friends to go do something as dull as homework.

As bad as procrastination is, I can never seem to avoid doing it.

  11. When I was procrastinating finding a suitable article to comment on for my quiz... I stumbled across this one! I am definitely a procrastinator even though I feel 1000 times better if I could just get things done as soon as they come up. I am a cleaner for sure. I clean, grab a snack, make a list, and sometimes even a short nap before I begin. Part of it eliminates any sort of distraction I may come across trying to do my assignments, but mostly it is me just buying as much time as I can before I have do some real work.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I don't avoid procrastination. I don't want to be a procrastinator but I am. I am the cleaner, the sidetracker, the watcher, and the perpetuator. I like to leave things to the very last minute, like the night before, even the morning of. Personally, I work very well under pressure, and that's why i don't see it as a huge problem for me. When i try to do homework I'm always on YouTube looking for the right song to listen to while I work. However, I somehow end up watching random videos, and I'm not even sure how got there. Another social media I stay on is Instagram. It's the only social media that I have. Sometimes I even look for a distraction just so I can talk myself out of getting work done. Another thing I do to instead of being productive is online shopping. I AM OBSESSED.

  13. procrastinating is one of my many talents. I am the queen of procrastinating. I make up excuses as to why I just don't have time to do what I need to do right now. this happens about everyday but then I find myself on the couch watching tv eating Cheetos looking at my fingers wondering how im going to get the orange dust off my fingers with out getting off the couch. my procrastinating is just laziness I think. its a everyday thing even when it comes to cleaning my home, although my house is not messy it could use some dusting. ok a lot of dusting. when it comes to homework I admit I do wait till the last minute but it seems to work for me because so far I have gotten good grades "so far". lets hope it continues that way. To all the procrastinators out there if it works for you I don't see the problem.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I am guilty of being such a big procrastinator. I always wait until the last minute to do thing. I don’t mean to do it but like in the picture I always find something to do before I start writing my paper. For example, I usually think to myself “it’s hard to do homework in such a messy room”. So what do I decide to do? Clean my room of course. The worst thing is when I finally get on the computer instead of starting my homework I start watching TV and go on all the social medias I have. I find procrastination is very stressful and hard on me but that’s usually the only way I get things done.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Procrastinating is probably my favorite and least favorite thing to do. I always feel like I get so much more cool stuff done when I procrastinate, but then, of course, comes the panicking when I realize I haven't done anything actually productive for the past week and now I have a 5 page paper due in the morning. I'm positive I've been all of these types of procrastinators at one point or another, but I'm notorious for being "the napper," "the snacker," and "the sidetracker."
I hardly ever avoid procrastination... I mean, I can't remember the last time I finished an assignment prior to the night before it was due...
Doing homework on the computer is never helpful either, because I definitely have a million tabs constantly open on my computer... facebook, wikipedia, youtube, itunes, random websites, etc. I can't ever seem to convince myself to close any. They all just seem so important.

    ReplyDelete
  16. WOOOOO! Procrastinators unite! This chart made me laugh because we all know someone for each section. For me, I am the cleaner/internet researcher/sidetracker.

Since a lot of us grew up in the internet age, we check our multiple social media accounts, get lost on youtube.......and we know you can spend HOURS on YouTube. I don't like when it's quiet, so I need some ambience noise. I usually go to a cafe in Berkeley where there are a lot of people working to motivate me to for, but even there, it's hard because there is always that urge to watch the one last cat video, or "What Does The Fox Say"

  17. Reading these comics were funny. I for sure could hear myself saying some of these things before doing homework. if I could pick my two top comics that described me it would have to be the napper and the watcher. right when I get home from school I jump on my bed like I haven't seen it in years and take a nap. they rage from 30 minutes to two hours. I have to nap or else I would bed up going to sleep at around 8. once im up from my nap I feel like I have all this energy to get everything done. so I think I benefit from taking naps. and I think everyone can. naps aren't just for little kids. they were might for college students.as for being the watcher. i watch a lot of TV. if i know i have a lot of homework ill be watching tv and during commercial breaks ill continue with my work. or if i only have a bit. ill get caught up in a show and tell myself " oh theres only 30 mintues left i'll start when its over". And the end we are all victims of procrastination.

  18. This post really caught my eye because I saw a comic, I love comics because they are mostly funny and easy to read. I totally agree with this comic, there are so many different types of ways people procrastinate. This happened to me just the other day, I came home from a long day of school with a million things to do, but then I saw the dishes needed to be done. After I did the dishes I spend about an hour cleaning the rest of my house. I will do anything even clean if it means that I don't have to start anything on my list of things to do. People procrastinate all the time, we get distracted especially with the different types of media and technology today. We even find ourselves cleaning and doing other things to make ourselves seem productive when we have other things that we should be doing.

  19. I thoroughly enjoyed reading through the posts because I love comics and related to a few of the people. I avoid procrastination at home by leaving my phone in my living room while I do homework in my room. If my phone is near me, I get distracted and am too tempted to check it when I hear it vibrate or see a notification. By keeping my phone in another room, I use it as an incentive while doing my homework or studying. After accomplishing an assignment or after an hour of studying, I give myself a 15 minute break to check my phone or grab a snack. In fact, what also helps me prevent procrastination is that I constantly remind myself of deadlines but on the contrary, I like to make lists. On the other hand, no, I do not have any social media window open while I’m doing homework for the same reason as my phone. Although these comics are relatable to everyone, I fit under the “the snacker” and “the list maker” which makes me laugh because I love making lists and food.

  20. I am a HUGE procrastinator. I always want to find a bunch of other stuff to do before actually sitting down and starting my homework. If I could classify myself in one of those categories, I would be the napper, the cleaner and the social sharer. I normally always clean my room when Im bored just because I feel I have nothing else to do. naps are always a must especially before starting my homework because I have to be energized or so I think. The social sharer, I always have my twitter page up right next to my word document, just because I feel im going to miss something in the 1-3 hours of homework time.

  21. Reading the comics about procrastination was fun and I admit that I am a big procrastinator. If I know I have a long time to do something, I'll leave it to the last minute. I always say "I want to get things done as soon as possible", but I just don't. Especially now that technology revolves us, it's harder for me to concentrate on school work or other important stuff because I'm curious to check my phone every once in a while. Now I try to avoid procrastination by leaving my phone somewhere else or I simply put it on silent so I won't be tempted to check it.

  22. As I was wasting time putting off my in class quiz, I saw this comic and decided to stop for entertainment. Once I realized what the article was about procrastination I chuckled because that exactly what I was doing. Unfortunately I have yet to find a cure to my procrastination, but I've found that playing music help me gather my focus. Since I was born into the age where most work is done on the computer I unfortunately waste much time talking to friends on Twitter, Facebook and/or Tumblr. I try to avoid procrastination by scrapping up enough will power to close unnecessary tabs and silence my phone.

One of my many bad habits is procrastination. Procrastination is something that all students and teachers do. Anyone given a task that is long or that they may not like, will procrastinate. To procrastinate is the act to prolong a task by doing something else that is considered more fun or leisurely. Different people do different set of things to procrastinate. In the article blog “The 12 types of Procrastinators and Kittens”, they list the twelve different ways people can procrastinate, a guide if you will. The “cleaner” is a type of procrastinator that is never able to focus until he/she does laundry or dusts the house and furniture. I think “the cleaner” procrastinator could be my mom, as she does this often. “The Panicker” procrastinator is one that gets sad and depressed about something else or their work; they get so depressed that they are not able to focus on work. “The Panicker” is the kind of procrastinator I am because before I work, I often mope about other things in my life that are bothering me. “The Napper” is the kind of procrastinator that many people such as my family, my friends, and I all do. We take a nap before our work because our days are just so stressful and take everything out of us, and once we sit or lay on that comfy sofa or bed, we cannot help, but close our eyes and drift into dreamland. “The Sidetracker” knows that she/he has something due the next day, but they will work on something else due a month or so later, maybe because it is easier, more fun, or it seems really hard so an early start would help. Even though getting an early start on something big is good, it is important to be able to finish what is due first. “The Social Sharer” talks to his family and friends about what she/he is doing, which is not doing their work. Everyone does a little bit of all twelve things, internet surfing, TV, games, or wasting time and putting it off another day. This guide that could have been written by procrastinators or not, but I am guessing the purpose of this, is for us procrastinators to be able to see what we do is common and normal, and that maybe we could use this cute comical guide to be able to reduce our rate and amount of procrastination we commit.

  24. I have yet to find a way to stop my chronic procrastination. i usually find myself browsing the internet for hours until i realize i have a paper due the next day. I sometimes think that is a very big issue. I usually procrastinate until the very minute and then i try to convince myself that the assignment won't effect me that much. During the time i do sit down and do some work, i have several tabs open on my browser and just drift off into so many other topics. also what contributes to my procrastination is that i always have music playing and start looking up music videos and other music related things. i think the only way i can sit down and write a paper if there was complete silence and no internet access.

  25. Sometimes I tend to procrastinate just because I get distracted on the internet while I'm about to do my homework. I feel like its difficult to avoid getting distracted by social networking and other things on the internet. For example, usually when I get home and I'm going to do homework the first thing I do is check my email and blackboard to see if theres any messages from teachers, grades or assignments posted. But then, I usually get sidetracked, and end up checking my Facebook, my Twitter, my blog and everything else I'm signed in to. So I would say I'm mostly a social sharer because I spend the most time procrastinating on social networks. Next I am a Snacker because I always have to eat before I try to be productive, or I wont be productive. Lastly I am a cleaner because I don't like working in a messy and unorganized environment. In order to stop procrastination I try to set goals while working. For example I'll tell myself that I have to do a certain amount of pages or chapters before I can do something else. I also try to avoid my computer and phone if necessary. Usually once I get started on something I don't have a problem getting it done.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I wish I could say that I've mastered the art of avoiding procrastination... But then I'd be lying. My mind is erratic and I get sidetracked by the strangest things. That and some times I decide to lay down for five minuets and it turns into an hour. And sometimes I decide my desk is too messy so I decide to clean it and I lose another hour. On the times that I am on track I motivate myself to stop procrastinating by saying "Okay, only this or those pages to go and I'll finally be done and then I could sleep!!!!" Oddly enough, I'm not a big fan of social network sites, so that's never a problem for me. Overall I motivate myself with the promise of rest and sleep.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The main reason I tend to procrastinate is because I'm tired and don't really notice it. I work five days a week and go to school three days a week, so when I finally have time to sit down I'll be exhausted. So, I tend to be a "napper", but will sometimes space out looking at the TV. Or sometimes I'll have a bunch of cleaning to do and try to do homework in between, which causes me to not really get into my studying.
Something interesting that I have noticed is when people post on facebook "I have this ten page essay due tomorrow!". I always think: "Oh yea? that explains why your first thought was to jump to facebook," Then notice them commenting or liking something new every five minutes. Interesting.
That's why I think that website that requires you to write 500 words before you see a picture of a kitten is a step in the right direction.

  28. Procrastination and I are best friends. For some reason I always seem to find myself procrastination, especially when I am on a time crunch. Time and time again while I am working on a paper I end up going on my Instagram to see if there any new post from when I checked 5 minutes ago. Even as I am writing this I am on YouTube or Spotify looking for a good song to play. I am also very forgetful for example, at 7pm I am thinking, "I have to turn something in for my class, I'll do it right after I come back from the bathroom". I come back from the bathroom a few minutes later and I have totally forgot what I was suppose to do, and sometimes I would remember that there was something for me to do, I just can't remember what exactly it was. I honestly do not know what I can do to help myself, maybe if I lock myself in a room by myself with no internet.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Which one am I? That's a funny question; Try all of them! I gave up on fighting procrastination a long time ago. Now I accept as part of who I am and I honestly believe that it makes me great. I've displayed all these genres of procrastination in the previous week alone, and pressure makes diamonds; I'm living proof: a human gem factory. Without that visceral pressure let's face it I wouldn't get anything done, ever. No amount of kittens will make this man work any faster. I will probably show up late for my own funeral.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I agree with other students, without procrastination, I would not get much done. Procrastinating is an easy habit to slip into, but we all have the control to stop, instantly. It's just so tempting, to think, "Okay, well I will give myself another 10 more minutes on Twitter, because that paper isn't due until 3:30 tomorrow afternoon…So I always have the morning to work on it as well." This is an example of a thought process I may have. Of course, when it's 3:15 and I am rushing like a maniac to print my paper, (and the printer runs out of ink) I am screaming at myself. It is infuriating and puts me through way to much stress. So why do I keep doing this to myself…WHY?

    ReplyDelete
  31. I avoid procrastination by turning my phone off and putting it aside. It prevents me from checking it every time I get a notification. I also organize my assignments by due dates, so I can get done what needs to be done first. Though putting my phone away helps, it does not prevent me from going on social media. I usually have Tumblr, Twitter, and Facebook open in tabs on computer. I continuously go on Tumblr to look at funny post, go on Twitter to rant about my daily life, and go on Facebook to check my notifications. What could have been a twenty minute assignment turned into a forty minute project. As a procrastinator, I can definitely relate to The Cleaner, The Napper, The Internet Researcher, and The Watcher. I have three younger siblings, so naturally my house is always messy and I always convince myself that I can’t work until the living room is clean. After a long day of school the couch looks more appealing. I try to start my work, but I eventually doze off. While on Tumblr, a social blogging site, I can’t seem to ignore the funny gifs of cats. I have so many shows and so little time. My DVR is full off shows I need to catch up on. It’s hard not to watch the new episodes of the week. Theses are just a few ways I procrastinate.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Sadly, I fall into all twelve of those categories. Normally by the end of all my procrastination techniques, I become "The Panicker". The good news is that I am not opposed to staying up until the late hours of the night finishing work that I had plenty of time to do earlier in the week. Obviously it isn't the preferred method to complete my work, but I can safely say that I have mastered the skill. It couldn't tell you how many late night projects and essays I have churned out over the years. the number is ridiculously high. Although, the strange thing is that some of my best work has been done, energy drink in hand, eyes glazed over at 4 am frantically typing in the dark. I would say that my go to tactic is the "Internet Researcher" that way I don't feel guilty that I am not working. I can tell myself that I am simply researching then topic and hey, if I end up watching fail videos on you tube, it is a viable source of information.

  33. I think I'm the cleaner. It's so hard to focus on school work when there's so much to be done around the house. I'm also the Social Sharer. I'd rather be tweeting or writing a status about my homework than actually doing my homework. I think it's such a smart idea for that website to actually help you do your homework. Since I'm a snacker too, I tell myself I can't get up to get more juice or whatever until I finish a chapter or complete a few problems. Naturally, I think everyone has a little bit of a procrastinator in them, and it's awesome that people are coming out with new ideas to help stop that.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think I am Social Share and Side tracker. Sometimes when I am doing math homework and I can't figure out the problem I tend to let my tweeters and Facebookers that I can't figure out the problem or that math is going to be the death of me. It's hard for me to focus on one thing when I know I have a lot of other work that needs to be done. I tend to stop in the middle of one assignment and start a new one. Being a procrastinator is not a very good thing at times I try not to be a procrastinator, but when you have an assignment that's not very interesting it can happen. Now I don't procrastinate so much I write all my assignments down and when they are due so I can get them done by the due date.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Its almost sad to admit that most of these describe my procrastination. It has always been hard for me to actually do what I'm supposed to be doing. If I have to get homework done for school, I will go sit and start to do it but then I get sidetracked. I'll start watching television or doing something on my phone and then I completely forgot about what I was actually supposed to be doing. Ive been trying to keep myself from getting distracted and you just have to really make yourself do it, or at least that's how it is for me. And of course, get rid of any and all distractions.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I am a complete list maker. It makes me feel like I am getting something accomplished while not actually doing my main work. I can spend over a half hour on making a beautiful list, perfect, and hand written. But then soon after that I turn into the social net worker (Facebook is my drug of choice.) And then finally I become the watcher where Netflix settles into my mind. Before I know it it's dinner time and then time to shower! Then suddenly... WHAT?!? It's already 10 at night and I haven't done a thing. Well I guess I'll just go to sleep early so I an do it in the morning. But turning off that early snooze alarm is soooo easy! Good thing I have a break before my next class... Haha I can seriously stretch time to it's up most limits. But in all honesty I know this is terrible, not only for my memorization of what I just crammed into my head, but my health and stress levels as well! So when trying to actually diverge from procrastination, I remind myself of what I am doing this for and the goals I am working to. Then I turn off all noise and distraction and WHALA! I get into my zone and just go! It seems to work pretty well!

    ReplyDelete
  37. As much as I tell myself and others that "Oh! I'm taking a break" or "I have lots of time before I need to really worry about" I'm really just procrastinating. As by looking at this I am a for sure gamer. I'm always playing games in between my assignments. I usually tell myself only twenty minutes then I will return back to my work. Well twenty minutes ends up being two hours. I have the tendency to start forgetting what my original assignment was, and start wishing and at times begin believing that my real homework is to beat the game I am currently playing. But what I find more amusing is with all the games that I have on my laptop I usually end up wasting about ten minutes figuring out what game to play, before even playing a game. I accept the fact the I am a procrastinator, and even though it is bad this somehow gotten be where I am today.

  38. Sadly I am perfectly described as the perpetuator type of procrastinator I always try to extend my time by saying ok ill start at 830 but when it gets there I always add another 15 minutes. Procrastinating has been such a big part in my academic life that I just do it naturally now but when I do realize it I slap myself in the face (not literary of course) pack my stuff up leave my dorm to head to the library I’ve realized that if other people are working around me I seem to be more motivated in my school work, but what about on the weekends o late at night after the library is closed and nobody is doing homework I tend to open up all the social media devices on my phone and get lost in them after a good hour has passed I begin to realize that I have a speech outline due the next day so I jump out my bed and open up a red bull and prepare for a long night working on a speech I hadn’t even started. It’s starting to get better now though I’ve started to work in groups to get more work done and I utilize the library a lot more than I did my first quarter of college.

  39. This blog about different types of procrastinators' are actually pretty accurate. The categories named are ones people fall under. I actually rarely procrastinate, because I like to get done way before the due date. I know that I will worry about an assignment if I wait too long to do it. Also when I wait until the last minute, my work is not the best. When it comes to procrastination, it is hard to work with a lot of pressure. However, when I do procrastinate I am either the panicker or the social networker. When I have waited until the last minute I begin to freak out, because I always have tons of homework. I have to make sure I am focused on an assignment, and it doesn't help when most of the homework is online. It is easy to open a new tab and check Facebook or watch music videos on YouTube. Plus I always get easily distracted by everything. I try to avoid procrastination as much as possible.

  40. First of all, I really enjoyed the comic on this blog post. The little cartoons are very cute. Sadly, I do admit I am one of those people who procrastinate. I believe everyone procrastinates once in a while, even the people who deny procrastinating. My habit of procrastination is not as bad as other people who put things very last minute. However, I am guilty of being the napper, the social sharer, the internet researcher, and the watcher. I like to take naps before starting an assignment. As I am doing an assignment on my computer, I tend to have a few of my social networking tabs open. In fact, as I am typing this response, I have my Facebook open in the next tab. Also, before I begin homework, I have to watch all my shows first or else it will be on my mind as I do homework and I will not concentrate. However, If I'm not on my computer while doing an assignment, I tend to stay more focused on what I am doing and I avoid procrastination. To avoid procrastination, I get all distractions out of the way first and I make sure all unnecessary technological gadgets are far away from me. Then, I proceed to do my assignments. I know that procrastination is a bad habit but once in a while, I think a little procrastination is okay.

  41. Reading the comic based on the different type of the procrastinator there are , I think it is pretty funny and very, very, relatable. I can tell you that out of the 12 different type of procrastinator i would say that I'm at least 8 out of those twelve. Which is kinda bad. Avoiding procrastination for me is a very hard habit to break, especially when I tend to work better under pressure. Although there are times where I don't procrastinate and during that time I clear myself from as many distractions I can think of. I take my naps before I need to work on something. Same goes for eating, watching tv, going on social media and anything else I can possibly think of that would distract me. I don't think I will ever develop a better habit of not procrastinating, especially when I have done it for so long. But it works for me because at the end of it all I get my work done and most of the time it comes out better than if were not to procrastinate.

  43. Avoiding procrastination is hard for I'd like to say almost everyone. I think what works for me I try to avoid doing any work on the computer unless I absolutely have to. For starters I never buy eBooks. I believe this is the worst thing I could do for myself if I'm trying not to procrastinate. In my opinion its easier to pull out a heavy book and a few highlighters, then it is to read off a computer screen and lose your place and then lack the motivation to start reading again. If I can't avoid using the internet for homework I just have to make sure that I keep the entertainment tabs down. I'd like to say I'm definitely either a napper or a social sharer, sometimes even both when I go and look at how many times I posted in twitter how I want to take a nap instead of do my work. I use social media to keep me awake when I'm doing work and I tend to go for naps when I really just can't bare my work. In the end it has to get done so avoiding procrastination is a self-disciplinary skill that I think every student picks up on at some point in their educations.

  44. I can agree to this post completely. I would say I am "the cleaner", "the list maker", "the napper", "the snacker", and "the perpetuator". Sadly the word procrastination is lurking in my life every day. I wish it wasn't there! I always put things off to the last minute but I can honestly say that I am progressively getting better. I use chores, cleaning, or social media to get out of doing things that make me stress out. A great example would be an assignment I had in my history class. I was just dreading the thought of starting an essay, so I do what I know best, and that is to procrastinate. I wish I could say I wasn't guilty of procrastination but I am. My grades improved from one quarter to the next quarter because I acknowledged the idea of getting things done, due dates, and setting priorities straight. I've learned to set daily reminders and pin up post-its by my desk to make sure I see what I could and should be doing. The new ideas that people are coming up to help with procrastination is really cool. I think I'll try the "Written? Kitten!" app to see if it helps!

  45. I have to say that the comic was spot on with the types of procrastinators there are. I must admit I am guilty of eight of them. Mostly the napper and snacker, all that thinking makes me hungry. And then I'm so full that I pass out. But to avoid procrastinating, I usually go somewhere thats quiet so I can concentrate on the homework. Once I start the work, I have to try and finish it as fast as I can, other wise I will stop for one second and be distracted, next thing I know I'm watching videos of my buddies surfing. Just a window open for Youtube, and I have the social networks on my phone.

  46. I avoid procrastinating by doing things as soon as the assignment is presented, or you can work on it daily until it is completed. When I work on my homework and it is not due soon I have every social media tab open. I be writing more on social media complaining about homework instead of actually doing it. Now that I think of it now if I put as much effort into my homework like I do in being on social media, my homework assignments would be completed faster.

  47. I have no idea how to avoid procrastination. I don't think I can personally avoid procrastination. I admit that I'm the snacker, internet researcher, napper, sidetracker, list maker, although I don't end up following the list, perpetuation, cleaner, and watcher. I don't even mean to procrastinate but other things end up requiring my attention. I try to make list and write down each and everything that I have to do but unfortunately that’s when the napper comes out of me. I usually have everything open that I need but I don’t end up looking at it because I get sidetracked. I keep Facebook open and tend to constantly check Instagram or snapchat. Maybe one day I’ll overcome procrastination, but until that happens I’ll just stress myself out at the end like I usually do.

  48. I don't avoid procrastination too well. Procrastination is the typical process I have to go through to complete anything I am not 100% interested in doing. Usually, when the task that needs to be done is important I will keep the procrastination to a minimum. It's sad to admit that the majority of the task I put off doing are school related because that essentially where my procrastination derived from!
Having every social media window open while I try to do homework isn't a problem for me because I don't have any. My distractions are text msgs and online shopping.

  49. I am actually a mixture of a lot of different procrastinators. I can be the list maker, the internet researcher, the snacker, and the watcher. How avoid procrastination is by thinking to myself, "you know you want to be able to relax all weekend and enjoy your time with with your boyfriend, so suck it up and get it done!". I try not to work with more than one tab open when doing homework on my computer. Or if I need to read I go into the living room to read because I know if I lay on my bed I will become the napper. However, things do come up and I get side tracked. Sometimes I let it consume me other times I push myself that much harder to finish what I started. What motivates me more than anything is knowing if I get everything done before a certain date I can do whatever I want with the worry of going back and completing an assignment.

  50. I have hard time avoiding procrastination. When I start doing my homework, I have most of my social media open and I use them freely. However, once I start realizing that I'm procrastinating and it is getting late, I turn off my phone and television. That is when I really start to focus on my work, but it usually take 2 or 3 hours to get to that point. This is still a problem because I have to end up rushing on my work and not doing the best quality work as I should. I have recently deleted all my social media to help me procrastinate, but just like it shows in the picture, there are still other ways to procrastinate.

  51. I believe that I am the cleaner and the napper procrastinator. Sometimes I feel like I need to stay organized and do my laundry before starting my homework. Other times, I feel like my brain needs a nap so I can feel more energized and helps me think better before doing the assignment. However, that is not always the case because taking a nap doesn't always help me think better. Procrastination is always a problem and it is hard to avoid. I always have some sort of social media open when I am doing homework.

    Some ways to avoid procrastination:

    - leave your phone somewhere far away from you so you could avoid going on Instagram, Facebook, or other social media sites
    - avoid sitting near a computer when doing homework, but you can only use the computer if you need it for research
    - avoid sitting or being near the TV
    - sit in a quiet room or go to the library when you are doing your assignments

I think the most distraction we get is from our phones because our phones are almost like computers except in smaller versions.

  52. I like to do my work in advance so I always tell myself how much I can enjoy if I get my work done in the first place. I tend to procrastinate when I have assignments from class that I do not understand or have very little interest in.

When that happens, I avoid procrastination by being in a room alone, setting an alarm and have myself to get some work done within the time limit scheduled. Once the alarm rings, it's time for me to take a break: grab a snack, catch up the happenings on my social networks or watch a video clip on Youtube. In this case, it turns out as a motivation or a reward for getting my work done.

I used to keep my social media open while doing my work, then I realized that the distraction is too much for me to handle and it really challenges my concentration while doing my assignments. I will get lost in my own assignments, not knowing where I left off and when I am writing a paper, I may also lose my train of thought or "inspiration" if there is a notification popping up from my social media.

  53. I am a huge procrastinator, in fact I am doing it right now. I don't even know why I do it because I always complain to myself that why did I wait so long if I had so much time, and I almost swear to myself that next time I won't do it. Honestly, I don't know how to avoid it. Sometimes I trick myself into making me think a certain assignment is due before it really is, but then I end up thinking "ehh just kidding you still have time" and there I go again. I'm not a big social media person, but sometimes I do take "breaks" from homework to go on a social media. It then eventually turns into Netflix, Youtube or some type of distraction that really pulls me away from homework or whatever it is that needs to be done. I think I can be basically all of the different types of procrastinators except for the delegator.

  54. Growing up I always told myself to work now play later. This basically leaves no room for procrastination. Well, then I entered high school, now college, and, no matter what I say or do to try to doubt it, I am the procrastination queen (sadly). It's funny because when I first looked at this comic strip, i realized that I am not only one of the boxes, but ALL of them. No matter what it is i am trying to do, whether it be homework, read, or most importantly study for an exam, i ALWAYS procrastinate. And the thing is, i always find a reason to validate it. Whether its doing laundry or cleaning, i tell myself it HAS to be done, when deep down inside i know its just a distraction from my actual task. Why do i do this? i do know. I guess the first part of helping a procrastination problem would be admitting you have a problem, which i have now done. The next step one could use to help eliminate this bad habit and no longer be stressed and mad at themselves for waiting so long would be to set aside time to actually procrastinate. This sounds weird but maybe set up a day to actually do the cleaning, watch the marathon, or make the list, so that when you actually go to do the task you need to do, there is nothing to distract you. It sounds easy, but man it sure is hard.

  55. Looking at the picture I admit I could see myself in most of the situations especially “the cleaner”, “the snacker”, “the watcher” and “the list maker” so by the time I’m ready to get started to what I’m really about to do it’s already either “late” or I just decide to do it the next day. I usually procrastinate when I feel like I’m about to study a hard class or when I feel like I still have a lot of time to do what I’m supposed to do or when I feel like it’s not going to take that much time to do it. But after doing all of that, I end up cramming for a test or just rushing on a homework to finish it. On the other hand, I usually don’t have a social media open on another tab when trying to do homework (because I usually check on my phone) but what’s usually open is either Youtube or Netflix.

In order to avoid procrastination, I try to think about the “future,” like I try to think “if I don’t do this right now, this could affect my grade” or “I might end up cramming again for a test and could result a bad grade”. Basically, bad things happen when I try to procrastinate. So in order for me to focus, I try to put all the distractions aside by turning my computer off, putting my phone far away from me and going to a quiet place to study. I also try to take 5-10 minutes break every 40 minutes (or hour) in order to avoid feeling tired or bored so it’s just a reward to myself by staying focus for that amount of time and to just have a fresh mind for the next 40 minutes or so until the break.

  56. It's hard to overcome procrastination while I'm in my dorm room. Most of these distractions mentioned are things that I usually do by myself in private. If I'm on my own, I'll start watching some show or playing a game in order to avoid panicking about how much work needs to get done. Going somewhere a little more public like the library helps me focus on starting the assignment that is due in two hours. Especially, when I'm using a university computer and not my laptop, since there are fewer things on the school's system to distract me.

The closest I get to using social media is browsing several topics on Reddit. The plan is to not look at that site, or other places that aren't related to the current homework assignment, but that usually doesn't work when I'm already signed in on my own computer. This is why I go to the library, where I'm too shy to waste time like I usually do.

  57. While reading this, it made me feel guilty just because I know right at this moment, I am procrastinating. I procrastinate a lot but I feel like I need to is because I like the pressure. Pressure helps me concentrate more. I know I always try to avoid doing my homework and try to do something more productive like cleaning. And when I'm trying to concentrate, I always get sidetracked with my phone or my social media sites. When I close them, I find myself coming back to them. But what I try to do to avoid procrastination is lock myself in a room without my phone or laptop, and just do everything that I have to do in paper.

  58. Lots of times it is hard for me to avoid procrastination, because I've become so used to it. I do usually have every social media app open, including Pandora. Ill pay more attention to my music and what my friends are doing, then the work that is due. I just do not like to do work that will take time to do. I get distracted easily because it is taking so long. Especially if I am typing a paper, that gives me an excuse to use my computer, which gives me the ability to surf the internet. Visiting one website just makes me want too visit more, then I have multiple windows open with none of my work done, wasted hours of precious time. usually my procrastination pushes me to do better, being under pressure helps me because then I start to feel like my paper needs to be perfect. Making it seem as if I spent a reasonable amount of time on the assignment. 95% of my assignments, throughout my whole schooling has been done last minute. Not something I am proud of, but definitely needs improvement.

  59. I am such a procrastinator even though I always tell myself never again when I am working on an assignment that is due the next day. In high school I used to procrastinate a lot and when I got to college I was sure I wasn't going to but it is difficult. I am definitely the panicker when I know something is due the next day I immediately start to panic and my mind goes blank. Whenever this happens I know that my grade will not be best. I am also the social sharer I think that social media has a lot to do with people procrastinating. It is a big distraction to some, myself included. The only times I don't procrastinate are when the assignment is worth a lot of points. Procrastinating is so stressing I don't know why I continue to do it.

  60. I have to admit I was a procrastinator during my senior year of high school. Freshman year I didn't really procrastinate, sophomore year just a little, and junior year I would never because I took many classes. Something about being a senior that made me think yeah I'll do that later. I was the gamer, the sidetracker, the internet researcher, and the social sharer. The worst part was procrastinating on big assignments. A project that is due two weeks after it was assigned. In my mind," I'll start it eventually or I'll do research soon". A week and three days after I am only beginning my project! I just hope for the best grade because I waited till the end. So far almost two months into my freshman year of college I have not procrastinated one bit. I learned from my high school days to not do it again. College is way different than high school I can say. But you never know things might change in a couple of years.

  61. I would have to say I am the queen at procrastination. I could tell myself a million times that i need to finish this assignment within the next hour or so, but as soon as the procrastination kicks in my assignments wont be complete until 3am or even early the next day. Looking at the chart above, I would have to say I am definitely the cleaner, the snacker, the list maker, and #1 the napper. First off, I can not begin an assignment if my space is not clean. Then, I like to make a list of assignments I plan to do in order of importance. 9 times out of 10, I will only complete 1-2 items on my list. As I begin to work I notice that I am a bit hungry so I grab a snack or two. Then I realize that I wont be able to finish my work until I take a little nap. When I get up, it's usually 1am and then I'll be ready to do my work. At this point in my life I am focusing on not taking as much naps as I usually do.

  62. I am in constant denial that I am not a procrastinator. I try hard to do assignments or projects the day that it was assign, but my senior year in high school I started put things to the side until last minute. When the assignment is getting closer to the due date I will become the Panicker. Throughout high school I had every social media open and for some reason if I didn't I couldn't focus. Now that I am in college I have become the List Maker and I would create a checklist of all my homework. The list is actually helping me cause I focus on one thing at a time and I try to plan out my day, however all these social media is distracting me. Especially since I am away from home I try to talk to my friends when I have a chance.

  63. Procrastinating is the worst because you are purposely avoiding work that should have been done beforehand. We are all guilty of procrastinating, especially me. I procrastinate on not procrastinating! Out of the 12 types of procrastinators I would say that I am the cleaner, the picnicker, the internet researcher, the social share, the snacker and the watcher. Yes, I get distracted A LOT, it is ridiculous. What makes it worse is that my phone is right next to me as I try to do my work and it always seems as if it is calling my name so it can be used. I always say I can do my work within 2-3 hours even the day before it is due but let’s be real, including the distractions it can take me the whole day. For example, I procrastinated on my outline last night, I didn’t even finish it. Instead I decided to go to sleep and woke up late for class this morning.

  64. Procrastinating has always been one of my bad qualities you can say. Even to this day I have trouble with it, even though I have gotten better over the years. I am the type of person that will wait to the absolute last moment that I am able to do things. I have seen that in the past it has effected my grades in classes so that was when I decided that I would try my best to stop this bad habit. When I am studying I leave my phone in the opposite side of the room to avoid text messages or social media alerts that could potentially cause distraction. This is a method that has been working for me; I suggest that people do this. The only thing that I still have trouble with is avoiding opening another web page when I am writing an essay or doing research on a computer.

  65. Laughing as I went through each type of procrastinator made me realize it's probably because I am one myself. The ones I identified most with were "The Cleaner", "The List Maker", and "The Watcher". I can never seem to get anything done unless every inch of my room has been cleaned, I've made a list of everything I need to get done from the minute I should be starting to the minute I should be done (key word: should), or I've gotten to an okay part of a TV series where I can take a break (which is never).

As hard as it is to not procrastinate, the thing that helps is keeping the end goal in mind, or even the temporary sense of accomplishment. When I am able to get a lot of my to-list done in one day, it definitely makes me feel like I am reaching my full potential. Keeping the end goal in mind, which for me is to get into the CSUEB nursing program, is also a significant motivator because even though it seems like procrastinating at the moment is okay, procrastination adds up and can result in dire consequences.

Unlike my generation, I don't actually have social media (except for the occasional Pinterest). This, however, does not make it easier when avoiding procrastination as I often try to cram my tiny laptop screen with the latest episode of the Flash and my half-written essay.

  66. Procrastination is one of the top main qualities I have throughout my high school years and now. From the 12 different types of procrastinators, I am the sidetracker, internet searcher, snacker, watcher, and the prepetuator.I always seem to find excuses to do my homework and not do them until last minute. I like to avoid my procrastination by feeling motivated to get up out of bed and sitting on my desk with my laptop and a notebook. That's what gets me to do my homework. While I do my homework, I do have my phone next to me and Netflix as another tab on my laptop. If my phone is next to me, I check all of my social media and continue an hour later. To solve this problem, I put my phone somewhere else and have it not distract me.
